Growing up in a rough section of the Bronx, New York, Bobby barely survived several serious bouts of rheumatic fever that left him with a damaged heart. It was not until he was an adult that he learned that the woman he thought to be his sister, Vanina Juliette “Nina” Cassotto, 17 years his senior, was in fact his mother, and the woman he thought to be his mother was his grandmother. However, 4 months later, in October 1973, Bobby filed for divorce because of his worsening health conditions.

Bobby had poor health throughout his entire life because of his weakened heart. During his first heart surgery, he had two artificial valves implanted, then spent most of that year recovering from the surgery. During the last few years of his life, he was often administered oxygen during and after his performances. Bobby died on December 20, 1973, following surgery to repair his heart valve. He died minutes afterward in the recovery room without regaining consciousness. One of the doctors’ diagnoses of Bobby’s death was that he was just too weak to recover.
