Robert’s first marriage was to actress Barbara Rucker in 1968. They divorced in 1974. He met actress Heather Menzies on Libby’s corned-beef-hash commercial set in 1974 and fell for her. Heather Margaret Brotherston Menzies was born in Toronto on December 3, 1949, to Scottish parents who had emigrated to Canada after the war. Her father was a struggling artist. She had a younger sister, Sheila, and an older brother, Neil. She was married to John Cluett from 1969 to 1973. Heather & Robert dated for a while before getting married in 1975. They adopted three children.
In July 1996, Robert announced he had been diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that attacks soft tissue. He was declared cancer free in 1998.
