After the diagnosis, Roger realized that she had little time left on earth. So, he joined the fight against cancer. He organized the Annual Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament. The goal of the program was to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

Sadly, Roger succumbed to cancer in 1985. He passed away at M.D Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas on the 14th of December of the same year.
