Pros and Cons of Video Baby Monitors

If you’re a new parent, chances are you put a video baby monitor on your registry. Smart tech for parents has become a wildly popular market segment. It probably seems mind-blowing to past generations that millennial parents actually track their babies’ every move, even when they’re in another room sleeping.

Baby monitors started to get popular in the 1980s, and since then they’ve gone through a series of improvements that have made them into the updated tech we know today. Video baby monitors or smartphone apps that connect to a camera allow parents to check in whenever they feel the need.

Parents rely on baby monitors for an added layer of security and convenience, but is there ever a reason to rethink this new technology? Here are some of the pros and cons of using a video baby monitor.

Pro: Peace of mind

It’s such a good feeling to know you can peek at what Baby is doing any time you want to. When they’re an infant, it can be helpful for those new parent nerves to know that everything is fine. And sometimes toddlers are too sneaky for their own good, pulling relatively silent antics like climbing out of the crib, so being able to “spy” on them can be a relief!

Con: Feeling anxious and helicoptering too much

On the other hand, if you have postpartum anxiety like I did or you’re just prone to being a bit of a worrywart, checking a video baby monitor might start to contribute to helicopter parenting and just make you more anxious and unhappy. Only you will know this about yourself, but it’s something to consider.

Pro: Being able to check without waking them up

As a parent, you can probably relate to feeling a bit crestfallen if you accidentally wake your sleeping little one. “Never wake a sleeping baby” is a catchphrase for a reason! Even as your child gets older, you’ll probably still check on them before you go to bed yourself, and you might (like me) start to doze off one night and realize you forgot to look in on them. Knowing you can peek in on them without risking an accidental waking (or even having to get up, let’s be real) is a nice perk.

Con: The system can fail

In 2015, the Nest Cam, used by many parents as a video monitor, experienced an outage right around bedtime on the East Coast. Depending on the type of system you’re using, newer tech may be prone to glitches, which can be troubling for those who assume it will alert them if there’s a problem.

Even scarier? Some video monitors have been hacked by people with less than good intentions. It’s worth taking a look at the setup of the monitor you choose to reduce the risk of this happening.

Pro: Checking in from a distance

Video or radio baby monitors can be invaluable when you’re apart from your baby. For example:

  • You go out to the front yard to pull a few weeds while your child is napping.
  • You’re away from them while they’re under the care of someone else.
  • You’re on a trip and you want to see how they’re doing.

Being able to log in to an app and see for yourself how your baby is doing is definitely a huge advantage of modern baby tech. This is one reason why we love the BlueSmart mia feeding tracker - it helps you know exactly how your baby’s feedings are going when you’re away.

Of course, it’s up to you as the parent to decide whether video or radio baby monitors will be more helpful or harmful for your family. As with any new technology, there are pros and cons, but a video monitor can be a tool to help you feel more connected with your little one while he or she is away from you.
